Nissan Frontier vs. Toyota Tacoma Truck Comparison

The Nissan Frontier Delivers Value That its Competitors Can't Match

A good truck is not hard to find. The market is full of solid trucks that deliver exemplary strength and performance. They also, however, often come with a price tag. Many of the best trucks on the market are expensive. This can limit the pool of drivers who can afford to buy them.

Not so with the 2018 Nissan Frontier. A high-quality mid-size pickup truck with solid powertrains options, the Frontier delivers fun handling and, more importantly, a low-price tag. This makes it an ideal option for drivers who want a good truck, but have to shop inside the confines of a budget.

While its lower price tag makes it an attractive option, it still leaves some questions open. The big one, of course, is how it fares against some of the other trucks on the market. How does the Nissan Frontier compare to something like the 2018 Toyota Tacoma?

The 2018 Nissan Frontier

The five-seat 2018 Nissan offers a solid mix of value and performance. While its more modest engine might be best for more casual driving, its V6 option delivers enough power and to handle things like heavier work and off-roading. Here's a slice of all that it has to offer.

Performance: 2.5-liter I-4 (152 horsepower, 171 pounds-feet of torque, 19/23 miles per gallon), 4.0-liter V6 (261 horsepower, 281 pounds-feet of torque, 16/23 miles per gallon)

Feature Options: Rearview Camera,  5.0-inch display, Heated Leather Seating, Rockford Fosgate audio system, Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control, NissanConnect with Built-In Navigation

Base Price: $18,990

The 2018 Toyota Tacoma

A solid mid-size truck with decent features and options, the Toyota Tacoma is a popular option for drivers interested in a mid-size truck.

Performance: 2.7-liter inline-4 (159 horsepower, 180 pounds-feet of torque, 19/22 miles per gallon), 3.5-liter V6 (278 horsepower, 265 pounds-feet of torque, 19/24 miles per gallon)

Feature Options: Rearview Camera, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Push Button Start, Qi wireless charging, Heated Leather Seats

Base Price: $27,000

While the Toyota Tacoma does offer some features that the Nissan Frontier doesn't, the two trucks are practically on par when it comes to performance. The Tacoma's V6 engine does have a slight edge in terms of horsepower when compared to the Frontier's, but it falls shorter in the torque department. More importantly, the Tacoma delivers similar road performance while costing significantly more. Even if you just limit yourself to the base models of both trucks, the Tacoma's price tag is more than $8,000 higher than what Nissan recommends for the Frontier. While the Tacoma might have some advantages, the Nissan Frontier is the truck that's going to save your wallet the most.
